The excitement of the Women's World Cup has died down a little over the past two weeks, but my infatuation with Alex Morgan isn't over yet... not until say Thursday or Friday of this week... probably.

She is the young forward on the United States Women's National Team, blitzing by defenders with her long strides, often putting the ball in the back of the net. Recently graduated from UC Berkeley, she currently plays in the Women's Professional Soccer League for Western New York Flash.

Diamond Bar's Alex Morgan's role was heroine for the U.S. women's national team Wednesday night. Her first international goal gave the Americans a 1-1 draw with China in Chester, Pa., four nights after beating their old rival in Kennesaw, Ga.

You can show your appreciation this weekend for Morgan, a Diamond Bar High School grad who first played for the full national team last March. She's expected to be back in a Cal jersey for games Friday night at UCLA and Sunday afternoon against USC at McAllister Park.

Morgan, making her third appearance for the U.S., finished a feed from Hermosa Beach's Abby Wambach in the 83rd minute to save the U.S. from defeat in a warmup for the region's Women's World Cup qualifying tournament, which begins later this month in Mexico. Two-time defending champion Germany will stage the sixth WWC next summer.

The U.S. beat China, 2-0, Saturday night in Kennesaw, Ga., as Heather O'Reilly set up Megan Rapinoe in the 21st minute, then netted the winner in the 37th. Wambach, Redondo Beach's Shannon Boxx (South Torrance HS), Lake Forest's Amy Rodriguez (Santa Margarita Catholic HS/USC) and Lauren Cheney (UCLA) played in both games. Hermosa Beach's Lindsay Tarpley came off the bench Wednesday, her first international game since tearing an anterior cruciate ligament last year.

UCLA's Sydney Leroux, in her first full national team camp, did not make the game roster for either match.

The CONCACAF qualifiers will be played Oct. 28-Nov. 8 in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, with the U.S. taking on Costa Rica, Haiti and Guatemala in Group B. The top two will advance to the semifinals, along with the top two from Group A (Mexico, Canada, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana), with the winners advancing to the Women's World Cup and the winner of the third-place game facing Europe's No. 5 team for another berth.

International:

2008 Olympic gold medalist. Played in four matches for the USA before undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in early May. Came back to play in three more games before the Olympics, earning a shutout in the Peace Queen Cup against Italy. Earned a shutout over Norway in the USA’s third match of the 2008 Algarve Cup, helping the Americans to the championship game. Played in her most important international match to date against Canada in the championship game of the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, made several excellent saves and sealed the win with a penalty kick stop in the shootout victory over Canada. 2007: Named to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup team as the third goalkeeper. A member of the 2007 and 2006 residency programs. Earned her first cap in goal and her first shutout on March 9, 2005 in a 1-0 victory over France (and made two saves in that match). Earned her first cap on Oct. 16, 2004 against Mexico as a forward since the U.S. had already utilized all of its field players off the bench. Played the last four minutes of the contest coming on for Angela Hucles, who rolled her ankle. Youth: A member of the 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 U-21 Nordic Cup Teams, she helped the USA to titles in Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden respectively. Also a member of the USA’s U-18 and U-16 National Team pools.

College:

Played in 71 games in her career at Stanford University, starting 66. Played her senior season for Stanford in 2004, starting all 22 games while playing 2044 minutes and allowing just 10 goals for a 0.44 GAA, good for third in the NCAA. Earned 10 shutouts and was named First-Team All-Pac 10 (her third All-Pac-10 recognition) and honorable mention All-Academic Pac-10. Also named First-Team NSCAA All-American, co-captain and a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. In 2003 as a junior, she earned First-Team All-West Region and All-Pac-10 honors. She co-captained the team, starting all 21 games while playing 1,947 minutes, posted a 0.79 GAA and recorded seven shutouts on the year. Named a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy. Earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Tops the Stanford record book with a 0.41 career goals-against average. Ranks No. 3 in Cardinal history with 29 career shutouts. As a junior in 2002, she was named First-Team NSCAA All-American and earned First-Team All-West Region and All-Pac-10 honors. Started all 23 games in goal, amassing 2,047 minutes on the season. Finished the year as the nation's top goalkeeper with a 0.18 goals-against average. She recorded 18 shutouts and allowed only four goals all season. Set single-season Cardinal records in minutes played (2,047), total shutouts (18), goals allowed (4) and goals-against average (0.18). Also set the record for fewest goals allowed in the Pac-10. She posted career-high seven consecutive shutout games, shutting out Cal Poly, California, Notre Dame and Portland in the NCAA Tournament. Earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Red-shirted in 2001 due to a torn ACL. In 2000, she made five appearances, picking up four shared shutouts and saw action in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament against San Jose State. Made her collegiate debut in the second half of a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's, playing 15 minutes.

High School / Youth Club:

Played for the boys team at Boyertown High School for all four years, playing on the field a bit as well as in goal. Also played basketball and lacrosse, where she was an All-American. Played club soccer for FC DELCO, winning several state championships. In 2005, inducted into the FC DELCO Hall of Fame. Also played for Souderton in her earlier club years, as well as with a boys’ club team from Boyertown. Played a significant time on the field as well.

Personal:

Full name is Nicole Renee Barnhart. Nickname is "Barnie". Finished high school academic career with a 4.2 GPA. Interested in working as a graphic artist in advertising or marketing. Earned a double major in studio art and psychology from Stanford. Graduated in June of 2005. Also interested in art therapy and working with children in this field. Played three months of lacrosse for Stanford after the completion of her senior year of soccer eligibility, but stopped playing and became the team manager after turning professional with the U.S. team at the Algarve Cup. Studied American Sign Language for two years at Stanford and would love to further her studies. Does not like chocolate. In the fall of 2007, she will be serving her third year as volunteer assistant women’s soccer coach at Stanford. In her free time, enjoys drawing, creating digital artwork. Enjoys cooking.
